British Empire Fuels History

We are proud to be a local family owned and operated business. With over 70 years of experience, British Empire Fuels is the trusted name in propane, HVAC, and fuel oil delivery in Kawartha Lakes and Trent Lakes. Established in 1940 by the Ewell family after they immigrated to Canada from England, our company was originally founded as British Empire Coal Supply Co., located in Toronto, Ontario. Renamed British Empire Fuels Inc. in 1960, Bert Ewell, son of the founders, purchased property on Hwy. 36 South in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Mr. Ewell then moved the company to the Kawartha Lakes area in 1967, where he and his wife, Ruth, successfully ran the company for 14 years.

In February of 1981, Ross and Madeline Whyte purchased the successful British Empire Fuels. Mr and Mrs. Whyte have lived in the Kawartha Lakes area their entire lives, and Ross’s vast experience in the heating business helped British Empire Fuels grow and expand their services and offerings for their clients. As the years passed, Ross and Madeline’s sons, Rob and Greg, joined the business, and today they run and operate the business that their parents built. We are extremely proud to be a locally-owned, family-run business.
